Our kitten wellness program is intended to help get your kitten started on the right path to a long and healthy life. The first few months of your kitten’s life are a critical period in your kitten’s development. We can provide you with the support and tools necessary to help him or her grow into a well-mannered, healthy cat, including information and advice on nutrition, litter box training, introduction to other pets and behaviour.
Call us to schedule your new kitten for his or her first exam as soon as possible, even before you bring them home. Until your kitten has received their full series of vaccines, he or she is susceptible to many serious but preventable diseases. It is important to keep your kitten away from other animals where their vaccinations are unknown, until their series of vaccines are complete. We will vaccinate your new pet against rabies and panleukopenia. Depending on your cat’s risk, we may also recommend vaccinating him or her against other diseases, such as feline leukemia virus (FeLV) and feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV).
Your kitten will also need to be tested and treated for parasites, which are common in young cats. Roundworms are found in the intestines of an infected animal. Many cats do not show signs of infection; however, cats with major roundworm infections, especially kittens, can have diarrhea, vomiting, weight loss, dull hair, and a pot-bellied appearance. The cat may also cough if the roundworms move into the lungs. Because cats can have worms without showing any symptoms, it is important for all kittens to be treated for roundworms with multiple de-worming treatments. Not only does this rid them of the infection but it also prevents you and the rest of your family from becoming infected. Roundworms are a zoonotic parasite, meaning they can be transmitted from pets to people. By ensuring that your kitten is treated, you can keep your entire family safe from these and other parasites.
